Hey All! It’s me, Jennifer Gilmore Sawyer, President of Biz to Biz Now. I haven’t been the one writing the Biz to Biz Now monthly blog but, I’m going to start. Why? Because we here at Biz to Biz Now are real people running a small business, just like many of our members and we experience the same ups and downs. Underlying for us is that we have a true passion for helping our members succeed and to create a community that fosters growth and mentorship (refer to 2023-10-10 blog for more info). It is my personal goal to make Biz to Biz Now an organization that our members are proud to be a part of. As such, I feel it is important that our blog readers get to know us, the real us.
First, I’d like to share and celebrate that Tami Beich-Sparks and I have been in the professional networking industry for a combined 27 years! As I think back, I’ve personally been involved with networking groups that have failed and I’ve also participated in highly successful networking groups. Over the years, I’ve seen multiple examples of what works and what doesn’t work, successful networkers and unsuccessful networkers. If I can be honest for a second here, it always amazes me when we have a new Biz member who assumes referrals will fall into their laps just because they joined a networking group. First and foremost … please understand that joining a networking group is an investment. To be a rockstar professional networker it takes effort to build relationships with those you are networking with so they feel like they know you, trust you and are confident in referring you.
This month’s blog dives into some of the steps you can take to be an overall successful networker. If you’d like to take it a step further, download our FREE Checklist to Be A Rockstar Professional Networker.
How to Be a Rockstar Professional Networker
In today’s competitive business landscape, building a robust professional network is more important than ever. Networking is not just about exchanging business cards or connecting on LinkedIn; it’s about creating meaningful relationships that can propel your career and business forward. Here are some strategies to help you become a rockstar professional networker.
1. Be Authentic and Genuine
Authenticity is the foundation of effective networking. People are drawn to those who are genuine and sincere. When you approach networking with a genuine interest in others and a desire to build real relationships, you create a strong, trust-based foundation. This authenticity will set you apart and make your connections more meaningful.
2. Listen More Than You Speak
The best networkers are great listeners. Show a genuine interest in what others have to say and focus on understanding their needs, challenges, and goals. Listening actively not only makes the other person feel valued but also gives you insights into how you can help them, which is the essence of networking.
3. Be Prepared and Proactive
Before attending networking events, do your homework. Research the attendees, speakers, and the overall theme of the event. Prepare some thoughtful questions or topics for discussion. Being proactive and prepared shows that you are serious and committed to building valuable connections.
4. Leverage Online Platforms
In the digital age, online networking is just as important as face-to-face interactions. Platforms like LinkedIn offer a powerful way to connect with professionals across the globe. Ensure your profile is complete, professional, and reflective of your personal brand. Regularly engage with your network by sharing insightful content, commenting on posts, and participating in discussions.
5. Follow Up and Maintain Relationships
Building a network is only the first step; maintaining it is equally crucial. Follow up with new connections within 24-48 hours after meeting them. A simple message expressing your pleasure in meeting them and suggesting a future meet-up or call can go a long way. Regularly keep in touch with your network through emails, messages, or catch-up meetings.
6. Give More Than You Take
Adopt a mindset of giving rather than taking. Offer your help, share valuable resources, and make introductions without expecting immediate returns. By being a connector and a resource for others, you build goodwill and establish yourself as a valuable and trusted contact.
7. Attend Networking Events Regularly
Consistency is key in networking. Regularly attending seminars, workshops, special networking events and networking meetings keeps you visible and top-of-mind within your business community. It also provides continuous opportunities to meet new people and expand your network.
8. Utilize Mentorship Opportunities
Mentorship is a powerful tool in networking. Seek out mentors who can provide guidance and support, and also be open to mentoring others. This reciprocal relationship enriches your network and fosters a deeper connection with your peers.
9. Be Patient and Persistent
Networking is a long-term investment. Relationships take time to develop, and the benefits of networking may not be immediately visible. Be patient, persistent, and keep nurturing your connections over time. The payoff, both professionally and personally, will be worth the effort. Keep in mind, this is a marathon, not a sprint!
10. Join Professional Networking Groups
Consider joining professional networking groups like Biz to Biz Now, which provide structured opportunities to meet and connect with like-minded professionals. Such groups often offer resources, training, and a supportive community to help you grow your network effectively.
Conclusion
Becoming a rockstar professional networker requires effort, dedication, and a genuine interest in others. By being authentic, prepared, and proactive, and by maintaining and nurturing your connections, you can build a powerful network that supports your career and business growth. Remember, the key to successful networking is not just in the quantity of connections but the quality of the relationships you build.
